TALKS FOR CHANGE
We firmly believe that addressing the issues of confrontation and violence in our communities requires more than just harsh punishment and retribution. After Jimmy’s tragic passing, Barry and Margaret made a conscious decision to turn their grief into action. They questioned the very fabric of society, asking, “Do we need more laws, or do we need to reflect on the kind of society we want to cultivate? Change must begin with each of us.”
Since then, they have tirelessly shared Jimmy’s story with over 15,000 young people, igniting conversations and sparking transformation. Jimmy’s narrative serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges young people face as they navigate through life, serving as a catalyst for change.
Through talks and presentations in schools, pupil referral units, youth groups, churches, and businesses, Barry and Margaret approach their audience with compassion and understanding, using Jimmy’s story to address critical issues:
BULLYING:
Highlighting the consequences of unchecked bullying behaviour, which can escalate into more severe acts of violence over time.
CONSEQUENCES OF ACTIONS:
Encouraging young people to consider the repercussions of their choices and behaviours in various situations.
ANGER MANAGEMENT:
Demonstrating the destructive power of unchecked anger and the important of managing it responsibly.
FORGIVENESS AND PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY:
Empowering individuals to take ownership of their actions and demonstrating the transformative power of forgiveness.
We recognize that achieving safer and more cohesive communities requires a collective effort and a deeper understanding of the root causes of these issues. True change can only occur when we challenge our thinking and foster a more positive narrative surrounding young people.
At the Mizen Foundation, we take a person-centric approach, aiming to empower all young people, not just those at risk of becoming involved in crime. We emphasize the importance of personal responsibility and accountability, highlighting how individual responses to situations can shape outcomes. Change begins with the individual, and it’s up to each of us to take responsibility for our actions, our relationships, and our communities. Together, we can build a future where every young person feels valued, supported, and empowered to make positive choices. This is our mission, and this is why Talks for Change is different.
